Two autopsies, one official and another independent, concluded on Monday that the death of George Floyd at the hands of former police officer Derek Chauvin in Minneapolis was a “homicide”.
According to the autopsy report commissioned by the family of the victim, the death of Floyd is a “homicide caused by asphyxiation due to compression of the neck and back which led to a lack of blood circulation to the brain”, the family’s lawyer said in a statement.

In addition, an update of the official autopsy published by the medical examiner for the county of Hennepin also determined that the death of Floyd was a “homicide”, judging that it was caused bya cardiopulmonary arrest when he was detained by police officers ”.

Both the independent autopsy and the updated official autopsy contradict the preliminary findings of the Hennepin County medical examiner, who found “no physical findings to support a diagnosis of suffocation or traumatic throttling” according to documents of accusation against Chauvin.

Chauvin was laid off from the Minneapolis Police Department and charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. Three other officers were dismissed but were not charged. Crump said Chauvin should be charged with first-degree murder.

Floyd’s death sparked protests and riots that started in Minneapolis and spread across the country. On Monday, the mayor of Washington DC, Muriel Bowser, declared a two-day curfew starting at 7:00 p.m. while the National Guard was deployed in the federal capital under high pressure.

Several protests are underway in Southern California, including Northridge, Brea, downtown L.A., and Manhattan Beach. Demonstrators in Hollywood are marching to protest the death of George Floyd.
